Removal Techniques For Unwanted Facial Hair

Unwanted facial hair can be a cause of worry and embarrassment. The growth of unwanted facial hair is mostly due to hormonal imbalances in the body. Heredity also plays a role in the growth of unwanted facial hairs. Menopause, pregnancy, irregular periods, and use of certain medications are some other reasons for the growth of unwanted facial hair.

There are several treatments available for removing unwanted facial hair – electrolysis, laser therapy, topical cream, and androgen-blocking drugs. However, these treatments should be carried out under strict supervision of a medical practitioner. Besides these medical treatments there are several home remedies for hair removal that you can try out on your own.

  • Waxing: In this method, warm wax is spread on the skin from where unwanted hair is to be removed. Once the wax solidifies, it has to be pulled off the skin to remove the hair. This method may produce minor irritation and redness on the skin, but is a good way to remove hairs quickly from a large area. There are wax strips and kits available – you can try waxing at home with any of these. You can also visit a salon for getting a waxing done. Waxing, however, needs to be repeated regularly and is not a permanent treatment for unwanted hair.
  • Plucking: As the name suggests, this method involves plucking hairs with tweezers. This is, however, only effective for a few stray hairs; not a good option for removing hairs from a large area.
  • Threading: This method is somewhat similar to plucking, but it employs cotton threads to snap the hairs. This usually is less painful than plucking but has the same limitation – it also cannot be used for removing hairs from a large area. Also, it may need some practice before you can do this properly yourself. For the first few times, you may need to get it done in a salon.
  • Depilatory cream: This method is easy enough, but some people may be allergic to the chemicals in the depilatory cream. In this method, the depilatory cream weakens the hairs so that they are easily removable. Again, this method is not a permanent solution; it has to be performed at regular intervals.
  • Homemade paste: Use a paste – prepared by mixing gram flour, milk, and a pinch of turmeric powder – on the skin from where hair is to be removed. Allow this paste to dry up and then scrub off gently. Another good homemade remedy for hair removal can be prepared by mixing honey with lemon juice.
