Home Treatment For Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is a common problem that babies suffer from. These rashes are caused due to moistness and the accumulation of urine or feces around the baby’s buttocks. Sometimes, diaper rashes can cause skin infection, formation of pus and even bleeding, in which case it is advisable to take the baby to a doctor. It is helpful, however, to prevent and cure them in the initial stage itself. There are a few basic measures that you should adopt to keep diaper rashes away. Make sure that you change the baby’s diapers frequently. Do this as frequently as the baby urinates or defecates. This will not only keep the region dry but also prevent the irritation of the skin, from contact with the chemicals in body wastes. During every change of diapers, clean the baby’s buttocks with a clean towel, and wash it after every use to ensure that no germs remain on it. Be very gentle while using the towel, since the soft skin of the baby may get chafed if too much pressure is exerted on it. This will prevent the spread of germs from repeated use of the same towel. Also, do not fasten the baby’s diapers too tightly, as this is not only uncomfortable for him/her but also obstructs the free passage of air around the area, causing dampness and increasing the chances of bacterial growth.

You should also “air” the baby for a few minutes between changes of diapers, as direct exposure to air is essential to keep the baby’s skin healthy. You should also apply baby talc or corn starch around the buttocks of the baby to soak up moisture and sweat and prevent infections from germs. Besides these general measures, you may also follow a few home remedies to treat diaper rashes. Bathing the baby in a tub of water into which half a cup of oatmeal powder has been mixed is an effective way of treating infected and inflamed skin and curing diaper rashes. You may also massage the juice of aloe vera leaves very gently on the baby’s buttocks after bathing him/her. Aloe vera has natural soothing and healing properties that relieve itchiness of the skin and help treat diaper rashes. Another remedy for diaper rashes is to wash the baby’s buttocks with a solution of eight parts of water and one part of vinegar. This counteracts the highly alkaline nature of urine and is useful in treating rashes.
